Peer-reviewed Academic Journals


The following journals are some of the top peer-reviewed scientific publications focusing on autism research. Although not all journals are freely accessible online, you can read or watch the video of the article’s abstract and find full publication text through your local libraries.

Autism is a major, international, interdisciplinary journal covering a wide range of research topics on autism spectrum disorders, including neural and psychological processes, causes, diagnosis, training, education, interventions evaluations, and practical applications.
Access to Autism is available online for free through Open Access.

 

Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders (JADD) is a leading monthly peer-reviewed journal focusing on a broad range of issues associated with autism spectrum disorders and related developmental disabilities since 1971. The journals published high quality research on topics including potential causes and prevalence (e.g., genetic, immunological, environmental); diagnosis advancements, effective clinical care, education, treatment, health policy, legislation, advocacy, culture and society.  JADD features free Open Access package.


Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities (FOCUS) features primarily applied aspects of autism and aims at providing practical suggestions for families and educators. The journal offers access to peer-reviewed applied research reports, as well as opinion and position papers covering a wide range of theoretical and practical aspects, such as effective interventions and media reviews.



Autism Research is the official journal of the International Society for Autism Research (INSAR). The Journal’s mission is to advance knowledge of basic genetic, neurobiological and psychological mechanisms in autism and related developmental disorders.




Autism Research and Treatment (AURT)
is an open-access peer-reviewed journal that publishes original research articles, review articles, and clinical studies related to all aspects of autism.





Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders (RASD) 
specializes on empirical research articles and reviews covering genetic, neurobiological, cognitive, and behavioral aspects of autism spectrum disorders.


Angela Nelson, J.D., Ed.M. Angela Nelson received her BA and JD from UCLA where she studied and practiced behavior psychology under Dr. Ivar Lovaas, and her Ed.M. at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, with a focus on technology innovation and education. As Founder and CEO of Stages Learning Materials, Angela has created autism, special needs and early childhood curriculum products since 1997. In addition to her duties at Stages, Angela writes for multiple industry publications and is on the board of the Education Market Association. In her spare time, Angela makes a mean ginger scallion sauce, and attempts to adjust to non-LA weather.
