This lesson is ideal for any number of students, ideally for kindergarten - 2nd grade, a beginning ELL student, or for a one-on-one session with a therapist. Students should be familiar with the emotions chosen for review in this lesson.

    Procedures

    1. As a warm-up, review with students the emotions referenced in the Emotion Cards. Show them each emotion, and have a discussion on situations when we feel each emotion. For example, “I feel sad when I fall down on the playground.”
    2. Hold up one of the emotion cards.
    3. Ask students to look through the verb cards to find an activity pictured that matches the emotion card. It may be helpful to limit the number of verb cards available. For example, a student might say “I feel happy when I bake!” or “I feel surprised when licking a new flavor of candy.”
    4. Ask the student why they feel that way. If working with more than one student, they can take turns asking each other, “Why are you (emotion) when you (verb)?” They can practice their response with, “I am (emotion) because (answer).”
    5. (Extension) Have students discuss any verbs where they feel differently from one another. One may feel happy while adding, and another may feel disgusted, for example.
    6. (Optional) If there are verbs left over that didn’t match with happy, sad, angry, disgusted, or surprised, you can use the remaining verb cards as a jumping off point to introduce other emotions.
